About The Book
DOUBLE LIVES
Double Lives tells the story of Willy Briggs, a rising televangelist, and his three daughters: Mandy, the eldest; Dawn, the middle child; and Jessie, the youngest.
Set in central Texas in the 1970s, the dramatic story unfolds against a backdrop of clashing cultures as Austin evolves from a conservative Texas city into a politically progressive and racially diverse cultural oasis.
When a television producer named Derrick Lewis and his wife Carla first stumble upon Willy Briggs, preaching in an abandoned beer hall in a small Texas town, they immediately spot his potential. As a team, they coach and develop Willy into one of the most-watched, financially successful televangelists in the world.
As Derrick and Carla embed themselves ever deeper into the Briggs family, their close-knit unit begins to unravel. Key players in the story begin to keep secrets and lead double lives. The lust for power corrupts Willy’s initially pure-hearted desire to help uplift the downtrodden and give them hope. Deceit and dangerous secrets seep into every corner of their lives.
Derrick’s lust for young women – even underage girls – grows stronger by the day. Finally, he can no longer suppress it, no matter how hard he tries to hide it, bury it or deny it.Only by holding each other close can the three sisters survive the pain and trauma inflicted on them. Mandy, at 19, struggles to understand herself as a young woman as she emerges from a relationship with a controlling, seductive, married older man. Jessie, at 13, breaks under the pressure of bearing a deep and shameful secret she is terrified to share with anyone. Dawn, at 17, tries her best to be the caring, supportive middle sibling, while also battling her own fears and insecurities.
The three sisters turn to their mother, Betty Sue Briggs, for support and protection. But their mother, a dutiful preacher’s daughter married to an increasingly powerful preacher, has trouble finding her voice and standing up for herself. She is incapable of protecting her daughters from the traumatic incidents that unfold.
Double Lives is an evocative glimpse into the secrets that can drive a family to splinter, the shattering impact of sexual trauma, which so often brings an abrupt end to the innocence and happy childhoods of many girls, and the power of love to bring redemption, forgiveness and healing.
